Dominion KSX - Utilization
Dominion KSX Features & Benefits Dominion KSX - Specs
Case Study 1: New ISP Router Configuration
Lets say you changed ISPs from Qwest to AT&T. You have only one shot to set the new IP
address and gateway information of a remotely located router using CiscoWorks, Telnet, or SSH.You set these parameters, reset the box, and cross your fingers. If it doesnt work, there is literally
no way to get this fixed remotely because the network is now down. Remember, Dominion KSX connects directly to the serial consoles of your remote devices, and
Dominion KSX can be reached via its integrated modem. So, in this example, you simply dial into Dominion KSX, and continue to adjust the router configuration. In a worst-case scenario, you can
even use the integrated power control of Dominion KSX to hard reboot the router. In short, you've solved your problem.
Note: Unlike Avocents DRS800, Dominon KSX has a built-in modem that allows you to dial-in even when the network is down. Avocents DRS800 does not have a built-in modem and even when
connected to a separate modem and RAS will still be inaccessible when the network is down.
Case Study 2: Applying a Windows Patch Heres another one we all know and love. Your remotely located domain server receives its weekly
notification from Microsoft stating a new security patch is available and, of course, it is a critical update. Using Terminal Services (or Remote Desktop), you accept the new patch. After which, the
dreaded message appears telling you that, The computer must be restarted. You click on Yes, (you have no choice anyway) and again you cross your fingers and hope the
server comes back up. Five minutes later, Terminal Services doesnt come back up and you know you are hosed. Dominion KSX, however, would help you out of this scenario. Connect to Dominion KSX, and you
might see one of a few things. Perhaps the BIOS has stopped the reboot process and says, Press <F2> to restart. Or, perhaps the new patch messed up the network drivers, and Windows has
booted in safe-mode. In either case, Terminal Services, Remote Desktop, or PCAnywhere would get you nothing. However, Dominion KSX allows you to keep working on the machine as if you were
physically present. And once again, in a worst case scenario, you can even hard reboot the server with the integrated power control. Best Solutions for Remote Office
